Synopsis

One Life (2023) tells the true story of Sir Nicholas Winton (Anthony Hopkins), a British broker who, on the eve of World War II, saved 669 children, mostly Jews, from the Nazis in Czechoslovakia. He organized the Kindertransport operation to bring them to London and, with the help of collaborators, managed to get eight trains to Britain, finding foster families. Years later, Sir Nicholas lives with the guilt of not having saved more children, particularly a ninth train blocked by the Nazis. The elderly Nicholas Winton decides to donate the precious scrapbook of photos and documents witnessing the entire rescue operation to the Holocaust Memorial Trust at the Oxford University Library. The story has been told on the BBC television show That’s Life!, where Winton was invited and discovered that hundreds of those children survived and became adults.

Our Considerations

This film is historically accurate and very important to understand our past in order to not repeat the same mistakes. It shows values like courage, family determination and willpower through the story of common man who became a hero. The film was very touching for the dramatic facts it shows and, during the vision, we were all moved.

This story fascinated us a lot: we were struck by the fact that Nicholas Winton plays a righteous role also in real life, not only in the film. Indeed, the kids he saved, as adults, are still grateful to him for what he did. Winton’s life model encourages people to be brave even in the most difficult situations and to believe in oneself.

In particular, we all liked the actors who played in this film because the worked very well, despite the emotive difficulty of the scenes. We would recommend viewing “One Life” in schools because it is very instructive for girls and boys of our age.
